An open letter to Ms. Polizzi, AKA the “Snooki”

Dear Ms. Snooki:

I have never seen your television show, which I understand paints a picture of certain Jersey locales and characters. I have read about your pregnancy and your embracing of your new role as mother.

I’ll admit when I saw your quote in Us magazine in reference to breastfeeding I wanted to reassure you that there’s nothing to be frightened of: "I'm just scared. My friend did and she said it was so painful…but I definitely want to pump because it's the best nutrients for the baby."

While it’s true that some new mothers experience some pain, many mothers have no problems at all. I would urge you to not take just one opinion into consideration.

And regarding pumping, I can definitely say there were times when all I felt like was a walking milk machine. If I remember correctly, there may even have been times when I walked through the house singing: Choo, choo! Here comes the milk train! Pulling into station! Toot! Toot!

And while some people may take offense at your statement: "It's kind of like you're a cow and you're just milking," I have to admit pumping really is like that when you kind of strip the whole act of any beautifying.

It’s hard to really feel all adoring and loving as you hook a plastic suction cup to your aching, hard, milk-filled breasts and slide the plastic pieces up and down until your arms ache.

And that’s not even to mention the leaking milk that comes out just about any time you hear a crying baby or the pain of clogged milk ducts that can turn into infections.

But all of this fun stuff is almost behind me as my oldest baby is 20-moths-old and only nursing once in a while and my milk supply is greatly diminished. Of course, now my breasts do sag a bit and have an entirely deflated, pancakey look to them, but…wait.

There are also the amazing experiences I had with my three children. The closeness and the intimacy that were created through those years of providing of my body for their nourishment and comfort.

The sweet moments of looking down at the fuzzy little head cradled in the nest of the inside of my elbow. The visions of sweet napping dreams while my baby’s lips continued to suckle in sleep long after my breast had fallen away from their grasp. The warmth and precious feeling of their weight pressed against me in absolute trust and love—even before they understand the meaning of words. The sweet smell of the sweaty cheek buried against my body. The quick and complete cessation of their worried cried when they thankfully find themselves tucked against me.

Home again. Safe again. Folded into my body. One again for just a little bit longer.

Snookie's Got the Parenting Skills!

Thank you Today Moms for bringing us Lela Davidson’s fun take on celebrity pregnancy: 5 reasons Snooki will be a great mother.

Instead of joining in on all the Snooki-as-mom bashing, Davidson explains why Polizzi may be a great mom with points like how she’s already used to being sprayed by vomit during her wilder days. And multitasking? Polizzi’s got it down!

My favorite point made by Davidson though has to be about questioning ourselves and what we would come across like if we’d had our early twenties filmed by a reality television crew.

Goodness. Not many of us would ever have been deemed fit enough to bear human life.

Snookie Touts Her Mothering Skills and Hotness

In defending what she believes will be her parenting abilities in Usmagazine, Nicole Polizzi says: "I can't wait to meet my kid! Everyone will be surprised to see a different side of me. I'm loving, caring, sensitive, protective and very maternal, no matter what people might think."

I applaud her stance on expressing her strong sense of self to her critics, but then she launches into a tirade which kind of doesn’t back up the portrait painted.

Snooki goes on to explain: " In high school, me and my girlfriends were freshmen and we were all pretty girls in cheerleading and stuff, so the older girls would bully us because all of their guys want to hang out with us."

I’m not sure if she is trying to portray herself in a new light that stressing how hot she was is going to win her many supporters. "I mean, people used to say I was fat when I was the hottest thing ever. Imagine what they say now."

I’m wondering if some Celebrity Momsters ever read their own words that they might notice their words don’t always match their intentions. I think it’s great for a woman to feel proud of her looks and to be self-confident, but Polizzi might be choosing the wrong words to express that feeling to the world.

Is Snookie a Fat Bully?

So interesting to really see celebrity moms’ personalities come shining through so clearly when talking about their babies.

Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi explained to UsMagazine how her baby will definitely be a “Jersey” baby meaning the poor child will be forced into Guido or Guidette fashions soon upon arrival.

But it’s another comment she made regarding Jessica Simpson that made me cringe: "I would die if I were her size," Polizzi said.

Umm…why is it that pregnant women who gain more weight than others are seriously considered as being wrong? If we can’t lighten up about our bodies and other moms even during pregnancy, what hope do we have for normal body acceptance?

Good gravy! Every body is different and beautiful. Didn’t we learn this when we were kids? I can understand us all having our deeply entrenched mucked-up ideas about body image, but isn’t that something we usually either hide or talk about in hopes of healing it?

Are we really still at a place and time where we think it’s funny to make jokes about peoples’ bodies? Doesn’t that kind of fall into this whole category of bullying, which I thought people were against?

Snookie Defends Her Baby's Honor As Only She Can

Well, it’s nice to know that women aren’t changed completely by impending motherhood.

It seems Nicole Polizzi (Snookie) is still full of bubbling energy.

Some twitter comments upset her a tad, hence the response: "I'll cut a bitch if you mess with my baby!"

Ah! Refreshingly real!

In a more contemplative mood, Polizzi reflected on her engagement in a March Us Weekly story: "I don't care what anybody thinks. As long as I know I'm ready and he's ready, I don't have to talk to anybody about it."

This is so true. Only Polizzi knows the truth behind the “reality” of what she expresses to the world.
